Henry Royce was a miller's son from Huntingdonshire. He set up his engineering business in 1884, and then built his first car in 1904. The Ghost remained in production until 1925, with divided between Britain and the United States.
Due to increasing sales in Rolls Royce cars, a car manufactory unit was developed on Nightingale Road in Derby. Cars continued to be manufactured in the Derby unit until 1939, and where the first aeroplane engines were made in 1915. The Derby plant still based in Derby today makes engines for commercial aircraft built by Boeing and Airbus Industries. At the start of the First World War Henry Royce designed his first aero- engine, the Eagle. It was used to power Vickers Vimy aircraft for the first flight from England to Australia.
In 1920, the company manufactured the 'R' engine to power Britain's entry in the International seaplane contest, establishing a new record of over 400mph, not only on land but in water. The 'R' engine also formed the base of the Merlin car.
Henry Royce died at the age of seventy, in 1933 by which time the company distinguished Phantom series was well under way. The Ghost was succeeded by the Phantom series.
